Carving Style Hatchet, Forged from 1060 Steel

Hand forged hatchet from Texas made 1060 steel. Head weight about 1.5lbs.

Whether your working down a piece of wood on a carving bench, splitting kindling for the fire, or doing a bushcraft project, this hatchet will work great for you.

Fully hardened and tempered, with the cheeks tempered out further for greater toughness of the hatchet head.

Overall length is 16" to 17". Handles are made from scratch with high quality hickory.

This hatchet is also useful for splitting wood, with the wedge that starts at the large sized eye.

The 1060 steel contains a more carbon than most axe heads, therefore providing an excellent, tough edge with great edge retention.

After the axe is forged, I put them through an extensive heat treat process to give the best steel performance possible.

This includes normalizing after forging, and then grain refinement of the steel. This is to make the steel tougher, and hold an edge better.

The eye on the hatchet is oversized for this tool, about 2" x 3/4". The larger than normal eye makes for a tougher, more durable axe that you can depend on when you need it most.

The bit on these hatchets is forged and ground for excellent cutting ability, with a convex grind for edge toughness, and so the bit doesn't stick in the piece of wood you are chopping.

The bit widens considerably at the eye, providing an effective wedge when the hatchet is used for splitting wood.

Poll is also rounded and smooth, making it more comfortable when the axe is gripped close to the head.

I build the handles from cabinet grade hickory, shape, sand, and fitting each one individually to the axe head.

A full grain veg tan, hand made leather bit cover is included and fitted to each individual axe head.
